I have been having smaller breakdowns the last two weeks with the
Sprinter such as belts, idlers, alternators and battery that have really
cut into the time that I actually spent servicing a route. Friends have suggested that my company should buy better vehicles as
much as I have to depend on it to get my work done. They apparently
don't know my company who, especially in Texas is not interested in new
or newer vehicles but mostly likes to run high mileage vehicles that do
spend a lot of time in the shops. Wednesday night on the way home, about 2 miles from my house, it shut
down again. We towed it on home with the Suburban and a nylon tow strap.
Worked on it for several days and decided that something went wrong
inside the engine, ie total breakdown. The engine has almost 400,000
miles on it and was never rebuilt although it had an upper done about a
year and a half ago. I found a rebuilt one that can be installed with a 1 year, 20,000 mile
warrenty as less than half the price of a new replacement engine. Fact
is, it is about a third of the new replacement cost. So far the only thing I am getting is no, we are going to junk the thing
and you will have to drive, what essentially is, one of our other pieces
of junk that are still running. But we don't have any extra right now,
everything is in the shop.
company that wants me to drive about 60,000 miles a year with vehicles
that aren't ready for that kind of mileage. I will keep you posted. This photo is when it was towed in for a missing belt last week.
